Leadership Skills Training

The traditional classroom environment has proven to be unsuccessful for those youth targeted by the YDREAM program, many probably long out of a structured learning environment and likely developed barriers to learning. These need to be confronted and eliminated before re-entry into the classroom. Other factors contributing to an individual's alienation from school and learning include low self-esteem, disruptive or abusive family relationships, juvenile delinquency, domestic violence, pregnancy and lack of motivation, and others. The program's leadership training will therefore use a range of strategies to teach such skills as effective communication, self-esteem development, anger management, conflict resolution, problem solving, positive decision making, goal setting, and time management,

Staff will use personal development and motivational curricula to enable participants to enhance personal skills, peer awareness, stress management, and leadership skills. Additionally, outdoors experiential activities centered around the basic life skill of "learning to learn." This is a key to the successful development throughout one's life and is a skill that employers need most in their employees. "People skills" are also essential to fulfilling experiences and are critical in successful job retention and in pursuing a career. YDREAM PROGRAM will provide the training at Cedar Grove Baptist Church located at 7641-8th Ave and Carson Boys and Girls Club. Outdoor community service activities will be held at various locations within the Los Angeles areas and will include beach, park, river or roadway cleanups.
